  Mastitis is a relatively common problem during lactation but the absence of specific tests frequently leads to errors both in the diagnosis and in the treatment. Consequently, milk cultures seem a key tool in order to know the actual epidemiology of this infec-tion, to get a correct diagnosis, and to prescribe the best treatment. In this part, six practical cases showing the usefulness of milk cultures for a correct diagnosis and treatment of problems arising during lactation are described. They reveal the contribution of milk cultures in reducing the use of unnecessary drugs during lactation.
